Hong Kong Open 2018 History & Historical Results

The Hong Kong Open is a HSBC World Tour Super 500 tournament and one of only seven Super 500 tournaments, the others being hosted in India, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.  

Held since 1982 as the annual badminton tournament in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Open was upgraded in 2007 to a BWF World Superseries tournament and the first four editions were held in Queen Elizabeth Stadium, Wanchai. After that, the tournament was hosted at the Hong Kong Coliseum, Kowloon since 2011.    

The tournament is a popular international tournament in a popular destination. The tournament has enhanced the popularity of badminton in Hong Kong since 2007 and especially with home grown talent reaching the podium.  

Wang Chen became the first Hong Kong player to win the men’s singles title in 2008 defeating Xie Xingfang, 2008 Beijing Olympic Silver medalist. Ng Ka Long took out the title of men’s singles in 2016. With increasing talent in Hong Kong, local spectators are likely to see more Hong Kong players competing further into competitions as we look towards Tokyo 2020.
