The India Open is a HSBC BWF World Tour Super 500 tournament and one of only seven Super 500 tournaments on the Tour. Held since 2008, the first three editions of the India Open were a Grand Prix Gold level tournament of the BWF tournament structure at the time and these first three tournaments were hosted in Hyderabad.

The India Open was upgraded in 2011 to a BWF World Superseries tournament and has been hosted since then at the Sri Fort Complex, New Delhi, which was the competition venue for the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games.

The tournament is one of two HSBC BWF World Tour tournaments being hosted in India, with the other being the Syed Modi International Badminton Championships, a HSBC BWF World Tour Super 300 tournament.

The tournament fast became a popular international tournament and it has helped to catapult the popularity of badminton in India with home grown heroes reaching the podium. Saina Nehwal won the women’s singles title in 2010 with her compatriots Valiyaveetil Diju and Jwala Gutta winning the mixed doubles title in the same year. Saina Nehwal came back to form at the India Open in 2015 and won the women’s singles with Srikanth Kidambi taking out the title of the men’s singles and in 2017, P.V.
